Our EWL Wrestler of the Week for the week ended December 5, 2010, is Alex Thomas of Clarion University. Mr. Thomas is a sophomore from Seaford, Delaware, and competes at 197 pounds for the Golden Eagles.
On December 4, 2010, the 68th annual Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament was held at Bloomsburg University. It turned into a special weekend for the Clarion University wrestling program, as the Golden Eagles, under the direction of head coach Teague Moore, won the team title. The team title was the first for Clarion, since they won the PSAC tournament the 1994 season.
One of the Clarion grapplers who helped lead his team to the PSAC championship was Alex Thomas, who marched through the event with four pins - in 1:57, 1:32. 5:56 and 0:51 (in the finals). For his efforts, Thomas was voted outstanding wrestler. By the way, Thomas also won the PSAC tournament last season, with a fall in the finals.
Congratulations to Alex Thomas, our EWL Wrestler of the Week.
The Eastern Wrestling League also tips its headgear to the following EWL wrestlers, in addition to Alex Thomas, who won PSAC titles at Bloomsburg this past weekend: Evan Yenolevich of Edinboro (125 pounds); Nick Wilcox of Bloomsburg (133 pounds); Derek Shingara of Bloomsburg (141 pounds); Torsten Gillespie of Edinboro (149 pounds); James Fleming of Clarion (157 pounds); Bekzod Abdurakhmanov of Clarion (165 pounds); Mike Dessino of Bloomsburg (174 pounds); Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro (184 pounds); and Harry Turner of Lock Haven (285 pounds). Further, we recognize the accomplishments of three of our EWL wrestlers at the huge Penn State Open, which was held December 5, 2010, at State College. In that tournament, Edinboro’s Mitchell Port won the crown at 133 pounds, and Pittsburgh’s Zac Thomusseit and Matt Wilps both wrestled their way into the finals at 197 pounds (but did not wrestle each other in the finals).
